A family of 11 in New Delhi, India was found dead this past Sunday. The victims include a 77-year-old woman, her two sons, their wives, a daughter and five grandchildren.

10 family members found hunging from the ceiling

10 bodies, discovered by a close neighbour, were found hanging from an iron rail attached to the ceiling, blindfolded and gagged while the 11th body of the elderly 77 year old woman was lying on the ground.

Its not clear how exactly the 11 family members died, however, reports show that this incident appears to be a mass suicide. Additionally, Police did indicate in a statement released to the media that handwritten notes found in the house show that the reason behind this bizarre incident might be some religious motivations and “observance of some definite spiritual or mystical practices by the whole family.”

“Coincidentally, these notes have strong similarity with the manner in which the mouths, eyes, etc. of the deceased were tied and taped” said Police.

The chief minister of Delhi, Arvind Kejriwal, visited the scene and spoke with the family’s neighbours who revealed that the family had lived in the area for nearly two decades. They had run a business selling plywood and a small grocery store. The store which usually opened around 6 a.m. remained closed up to 7:30 a.m. A, Singh, a retired train locomotive driver, neighbour then decided to check on the family, only to discover the bodies.
“The Bhatia brothers had recently started a dairy business from their general store and used to open their shop at 5.30am. Today, however, my wife noticed that the shop hadn’t opened till 7am and many customers had lined up outside. I went in to check and found the main door unlocked. The entire family was hanging in the hallway,” said Singh.
The bodies were moved to the Sabzi Mandi mortuary in the afternoon and a medical team started performing autopsies on Sunday evening.
