Once again, Philippines President Rodrigo Duterte has condemned the Christian God. This time around however, he went as far as calling God “stupid” and a “son of a b****”. He statement left many Christian followers both in his country and around the world outraged.
Speaking at a summit in Davao City on Friday (June, 22nd 2018), the President questioned biblical concept of the original sin:
“Adam ate it then malice was born. Who is this stupid God? “That son of a b**** is stupid if that’s the case”. The president added: “You created something perfect and then you think of an event that would tempt and destroy the quality of your work”.
Duterte also said that although he does have some faith in a God, he does not believe in a religion which purposes the ‘Original Sin’ concept and therefore refuses to accept it:
“That was your mother and father’s deed – you weren’t born yet, but now you have original sin. What kind of religion is that? I can’t accept it.
“I believe there is a universal mind, but… I cannot picture him as a human being. But I really believe, I have this faith and abiding thing, but don’t believe in religion.”
This critique is just one of many the President has made toward Christianity. Earlier this month, the President sounded similar remarks during a meeting with the Filipino community in South Korea. “If that’s the Catholic God, that’s a lie. Seek God right”.
His recent remarks however has stirred serious controversy in his country; this forced his spokesperson, Harry Roque to come forward and defend the President’s controversial thoughts on religion as “personal” opinion:
“That is the personal belief of the president,” he said. “We are free to believe in religion and we are also free not to believe in religion. The president has his personal spiritual beliefs.”
He also added that people should come to terms with his position on religion because they knew about his stance long before he became president:
“We cannot fault the president if he has no sense of hypocrisy and we should accept that because even when he was just a candidate, he never hid that from us,” he added.
